Use limits early, and step away when gambling stops fitting your life

Gambling is not a way to make money. Time limits, financial limits, breaks and self-exclusion work best when used before pressure or loss-chasing takes over.

Practical controls

Set boundaries that do not move after a loss

Choose an affordable entertainment budget before opening a casino site and do not use money needed for housing, food, bills or debt. Set a time limit as well as a financial limit. Avoid increasing either to finish a promotion or recover a previous loss.

Take a break if you hide play, borrow to gamble, chase losses, lose sleep, neglect work or relationships, or feel anxious when unable to access an account. A strong urge to “get even” is a reason to stop, not evidence that the next result will change.

UK support routes

GAMSTOP provides free self-exclusion from online gambling companies licensed in Great Britain. GamCare offers information, advice and support, including the National Gambling Helpline. GambleAware helps people find support and treatment information.

The Gambling Commission publishes licence information and player-protection guidance. It is a regulator, not a route for resolving every individual account dispute.

Immediate safety

If gambling is connected to thoughts of self-harm or immediate danger, call 999 or go to A&E. Samaritans can be reached free on 116 123 in the UK and Republic of Ireland.
